Super helpful book! For beginners and experts alike!I've been sculpting for some odd 3 years and I've come to find the best educational tools for any sculptors is always seeing how other people sculpt. And being able to have a paper reference where they cover all the steps from start to finish is key!This book is good about covering everything from tools (making tools) and materials to smoothing finishes.If youre a sculptor of any sort, buy this book!
Well if you want to make one of five sculptures (space cadet, mermaid, dwarf bust, cyborg, or "ocean empero") th n this might interest you...but I consider this book another one of my unfortunate Amazon purchases. Here's how the book breaks down:-13 page introduction;-10 pages on clay materials (mostly big pictures-yes, even a pic of a bottle of rubbing alcohol used as a "material")-6 pages on tools-2 pages on health and safety-7 pages on anatomy (helpful but again, more pics than content)Majority of the rest of the book is the projects, with more than 30 PAGES devoted to making the dwarf bust featured on the cover of the book. Not even a full dwarf sculpture. The mermaid project is ok, but the cyborg is circa 1950, complete with using a plastic bottle lid as the robots space helmet.The sad part is the pictures are really beautiful and the book good quality paper...but it's useless as a reference or even a decent how to because it's so limited in scope. I gave it two stars ONLY BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURES. Don't waste your money.
This is an incredible book I really wish I would have had back in high school. I teach high school art and have worked with Super sculpey for many years. Although I sculpt almost exclusively in Zbrush now, this a wonderful how-to guide and inspirational book for my students and myself.
Really great book! I like the format of larger areas covering general informational topics, and then a series of projects broken down by small text windows and pictures. The pictures are excellent, and it leaves you feeling you can actually do this.
Few books in any field serve as both an excellent reference and practical guide, offering simple and straight forward information on tools, their practical use, and proceeds to armatures, materials, and their use and application. From there one moves on to practical starts and solid tips on executing a sculpture. A beginner can start a project secure that he can complete it. Beginner to advanced sculptors (who probably don't need it) can also benefit from the book as a reference a trouble shooting guide. With so many art books on the market, few are worth buying, and still fewer worth using. This is one of the books that can be the only one you'll ever buy and still be fine, even though it doesn't (nothing can) contain all you'll ever need to know, which can't be exhausted.
Nervous to enter into the unknown to see if I have any talent in this medium makes you want to seek out the right teacher. I have found this book to be written for me and me alone. Its a private tudor. It covers every question I have, the next is working with it and it will come. Love to have the ability to create something with my hands. Thanks for the journey
I was disappointed. It has good pictures and some neat tips. but the 'lessons' are just step by step guides to make THAT sculpture with minimal reasons WHY each technique is used in theory and then displaying it in practice. It's a good coffee table book that you can learn from.
I purchased this as a gift to my S.O., and he absolutely adored it! He learned sculpting on his own but this book was very useful in tips and tricks he would have never thought to do or use; very handy for those either just learning, intermediate or advanced.
