This is the best thing I've read, as a horror fan and cat owner. The cats are just realistically-enough drawn that they hit uncanny valley but are somehow still adorably expressive. Ito draws his experiences of being a first-time cat owner while his wife is a cat veteran, and naturally he fights for their affection while being completely unaware that cats WILL mess with you if you try too hard. I wish this man continues writing cat manga. I am all for that. While Ito incorporates some of his notable horror style, it isn't a scary manga if you aren't fond of his other work, which I find nice as it's an accessible way of showing non-horror fans his style. The only drawbacks are that it feels too short (especially if you're used to reading his collected volumes like Uzumaki which is HUGE) and there is a bonus comic that hits you hard with sadness when you least expect it.
I've been a fan of Junji Ito for a very long time; Uzumaki caught abs held my attention from the get go. So when I first read snippets of this online, it was a really hilarious departure from his usual creepy fare. It is exactly what the title suggests: a diary of his life with his fiancée and their cats, Yon and Mu. But what makes it so funny is that it's still illustrated *like a horror story*. Perfect for those of us with a perverse sense of humor; also: has cats! Bonus!
I'm a big fan of Junji Ito. But unless you just want more of his illustrations, or to learn more about him, this is going to disappoint you. I can see how it could have been entertaining but it was just boring.
This is the funniest piece of work I've read in a long while. I'm talking laugh-out-loud levels of hilarity. Ito's struggles (and cuddly triumphs) are incredibly relatable. Please check this manga out!
Junji Ito is a horror manga legend, and I have loved his manga novels Uzumaki and Hellstar Remina for the incredible art that oozes discomfort and paranoia. When I discovered that an English translation of his autobiographical Cat Diary was available, I pounced on it right away! I'm a cat lady for sure, with two cats of my own, and Junji Ito perfectly captures the combination of adoration and frustration that comes with owning these adorable pets! This manga had me shrieking with laughter more than any other comic I have ever read, any cat person will be able to relate to Junji Ito and his fiancee as they incorporate their two kitties into their new house. I also thoroughly enjoyed that even though the subject matter is not particularly horrific (aside from stepping into cat poop and watching cats take over your life), Junji Ito maintains his horror aesthetic throughout this manga with demented visuals. The combination of cute and creepy is a winning juxtaposition for me - I can't stop recommending this manga to anyone who will listen, even via social media! If you like cats, or know someone who likes cats, you NEED this book in your life.
This short manga perfectly encapsulates what it's like to live with cats. The artwork is traditional Junji Ito, but the story has a nice slice of life feel to it. I adored every second of it, and have added it to my Junji Ito collection. It's the weirdest thing he's ever created in the best way possible.
Hilarious and strange. If you have a penchant for horror films/comics/etc and also cats, this is absolutely worth a read.
Junji Ito is a horror master who has penned some of the most iconic modern horror stories. If you're curious and want to feel your skin crawl do a search for the Enigma of Amigara fault to get a sense of his considerable talent. This is completely different, poking fun at his own serious style by taking the horror lens to a personal story about coming to grips with two inscrutable cats that unexpectedly invade his home. Great slice of life manga that will put a smile on the face of even the most jaded horror junkie.
